Scope and Content Head of main staircase on second floor of Robert Gordon's Hospital, Aberdeen Robert Gordon's Hospital was built in 1730-43 as a school for fourteen boys. It was paid for by the 'mortification' of Robert Gordon, a rich trader based in Danzig. Redcoats used it as a fort in 1745-6 before it was eventually opened as a school. This arch is typical of the neoclassical style, being rounded and decorated with simple raised masonry. Built to Robert Adam's design, on completion, the hospital was the burgh's largest and most regular building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
