Scope and Content Plans of Crail Tolbooth, Fife The lower part of the steeple may date from 1517, but most of the tolbooth was probably built after the burgh council ordered the 'bigging off ane towbuth' in 1598. In 1607 they applied to the Convention of Royal Burghs for some of the costs. The forestair blocks a ground-floor doorway so that only the lintel, inscribed 1754, can be seen. The main block was thought small, 'old and ruinous' by 1814 when it was rebuilt. The steeple originally held a prison. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
