Scope and Content Elevation and strip-plan Campbeltown Town-house, Argyll and Bute Campbeltown Town-house replaced an old tolbooth which was falling down by 1745 when the Duke of Argyll offered to fund a new one. The scheme fell through and money came from borrowing, from a local tax and from the Commissioners of Supply. The original plan was approved by the Duke of Argyll, even though he did not fund the building work. The wooden spire was replaced with stone in 1778 and the block to the left of the picture was added in 1866 to make a new main entrance. The burgh clock came from Greenock. It was specially made to fit the awkward space in the steeple. The bell came from Bristol. It is inscribed with the initials of the 1778 provost and baillies, Alexander Campbell, Duncan Ballantine and Robert Orr. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
