Scope and Content Elevation of Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. The upper storeys of the steeple were probably rebuilt after the 1723 fire. The roof was repaired in 1732 and the stairs altered. The steeple was repaired between 1744 and 1747. A set of jougs hangs on the corner of the jail extension to the right. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
