Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows the upper surface of a recumbent grave-marker which once lay in the garden of the manse. It is carved with a series of deep lozenges. These are set within the remains of an interlace-filled border. The collection of carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in Eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common them is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
