Scope and Content Argyll's Lodging, Castle Wynd, Stirling, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in the late 1950s, shows the older part of the house to the left. The sections abutting the road on both sides of the courtyard, and the screen wall and doorway are all the additions completed in 1674. The heavily-rusticated doorway is based on continental models. The building was used for many years as a military hospital in connection with the use of the castle as a military depot. In the 1960s it became a youth hostel, and after a period of disuse it was opened to visitors by Historic Scotland, with some of the interiors recreated. Argyll's Lodging is a large 17th-century mansion, partly built in about 1630 by Sir William Alexander of Menstrie, and bought in 1655 by the 1st Marquess of Argyll, who completed it in about 1674. It occupies three sides of a courtyard, the fourth side being closed by a wall with an arched doorway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
