Scope and Content Auchnacon farmhouse and barn, Glen Coe, Highland, from north-west The farmhouse is surrounded by a small belt of trees, planted to provide shelter from the wind. The barn is a two-storeyed structure; the ground floor would have been used to accommodate animals, while the upper storey was designed to store grain. The photograph shows the central door in the upper storey, which would have been accessed via a temporary ramp. The narrow slit windows would have allowed some ventilation, without allowing in too much damp air. Behind these buildings, the steep slope of Stob Coire nam Beith can be seen. Glen Coe is a very popular destination for hillwalkers and climbers, and the Mountain Rescue Team is often required. Achnacon farmhouse and barn were built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The barn is of the 'bank barn' type, only found in the West Highlands and in the English Lake District. It is seen in this photograph, taken in 1967, before conversion to the headquarters of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
