Scope and Content Enclosures, An Lag Bho'n Tuath, St Kilda, Western Isles, from north-east In the area known as An Lag Bho'n Tuath, the north valley, there are four drystone-built enclosures which face south. It is not known for certain what these enclosures were used for, but it is possible that they date to the time of agriculture improvements carried out by Reverend Neil Mackenzie in the 1830s. It is likely the enclosures were used for the growing of vegetables, and the walls kept out the sheep and cows. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
