Scope and Content Interior, Heather House, Drumlanrig Estate, Dumfries & Galloway, from the south This unusual rustic Victorian summerhouse is octagonally shaped, with roughly-hewn tree trunks supporting a conical roof. The roof and walls are lined with heather, decorated in patterns of Douglas heraldry including the winged heart (right). The walls are pierced by pointed-arched openings, and have bench seating, faced with short lengths of split twigs, around the sides. The twigs are arranged into geometrical patterns to form heraldic-style shields below the seating. Heather House provided a charming and shady retreat for the ladies of the house. Garden houses like this became very fashionable in the Victorian era, not only because of their rustic simplicity, but because they also provided a botanical interest for the female members of the family who collected the various species of heather used to line the walls. Heather House, a mid-19th-century summerhouse, stands in a clearing within the wooded grounds of Drumlanrig Castle. The castle, one of the great Renaissance courtyard houses of Scottish domestic architecture, was built between 1679 and 1690 for William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry.
