Scope and Content Drawing showing first-floor and ground-floor plans of Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. The top drawing shows the first floor, or 'middle loft' of the mill which contained the millstones and drying floor above the kiln. The lower drawing shows the ground floor, or 'bottom loft' with the gears which transfer power from the waterwheel, and the furnace for the kiln. The eight-arm mill-wheel is made from wood and iron and measures 1.25m wide by 5.44m in diameter. Various types of waterwheel are found throughout Scotland. Vertical wheels are referred to as overshot, breastshot and undershot, depending on the point of the wheel at which the weight of water is directed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
