Scope and Content Detail of the hall and staircase of Bridgend House, Main Street, Perth Bridgend House, an early 19th-century villa with Doric columned portico, was demolished c.1966. It was visited in the early 1820s by the Victorian artist and art critic, John Ruskin (1819-1900), whose aunt and uncle lived there. This photograph shows the 'flying' staircase, with its steps supported on only one side. The balusters are of cast iron, with a curving wooden banister. The panelled front door has a glazed window above it, marked out in a pattern of arches. The very small letterbox in this 19th-century door is designed to receive the smaller letters of Victorian times. Before the introduction of the 'Penny Black' pre-paid stamp in 1840, letters were folded and sealed without envelopes to avoid extra charges. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
