Scope and Content View from south-west of 'French Empire Dressing Room' on the first floor, No 34 Esplanade Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh Esplanade Terrace is a row of flat-roofed holiday houses with bay-windows in a seafront location, built c.1890. Joppa was a popular holiday resort in late Victorian times. This house was owned and decorated by a professional painter/decorator. This photograph shows the 'French Empire Dressing Room' with its sea view. It is decorated with red and blue paint, embellished with gold fleur-de-lys, wreaths and a painted frieze with mottoes. The room has fitted wardrobes and a wooden fireplace. Dressing rooms were used in Victorian times to accommodate the fine clothes worn by wealthy people. Clothes would be laid out by a servant, and assistance given in dressing. People often changed their clothes several times a day. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
