Scope and Content View of walled garden at Torrisdale Castle, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. To the north-west of the castle lies this extensive walled garden surrounded by trees. At the far end, built against the wall, are the hothouses and cold frames. A flight of stone steps leads up to this part of the garden. It is thought James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855), famous for his Gothic architecture, was responsible for the design of the original Torrisdale Castle. It is almost identical to the design used by Graham for Edmonston Castle in Lanarkshire, also in 1815. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
