Scope and Content View of front elevation of Cara House, Argyll and Bute Cara House was built around 1733 as the home of the lessee of the island of Cara, who rented Cara from its owners, the MacDonalds of Largie. The house is two-storeyed with an attic and is built of local, lime-mortared rubble masonry. Originally the front of the house was more symmetrical in appearance but three openings have been blocked up. The entrance doorway is in the centre of the main front. The roof is slated with chimneys on its gable-ends. This house is typical of a small laird's house of the early 18th century. It had a central staircase with a single main room on either side of it. The interior was remodelled in the 19th century and the staircase was renewed at the same time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
