Scope and Content Liberton Tower Mains, Liberton, Edinburgh The former farmhouse of Liberton Tower Mains lies among grass and trees just off the west side of Liberton Brae. Built c.1830, this secluded stone-built house is now a private residence but retains its original name of Liberton Tower Mains. This three-bayed Georgian house has an advanced and block-topped centrepiece, and single-storeyed wings that extend from the house on either side. High on the gable walls are small round-headed windows containing their original Georgian glazing. At the time of the 'New Statistical Account of Scotland', written in 1839, Liberton was a rural parish of 34 farms varying in size from 40 to 268 acres, many of which adopted a five-year crop rotation of potatoes, wheat, barley, grass and oats.
