Scope and Content View of east elevation of Knockdow House, Argyll and Bute The estate of Kilmichael was acquired in 1753 by Colin Lamont and became the seat of the Lamont family until 1949. The name Knockdow was not used for the mansion until the second quarter of the 19th century. The original house was probably built just before 1765. It was extended and altered in the 19th century. To the far left, is the side wing added to the original house in 1817. Mackie Watson, an Edinburgh architect (1859-1948), extended the east façade. Watson, working in 1919-21, added a semi-octagonal bay window, to the right, symmetrical with a late 19th-century one to the left. There is a pedimented window, bearing the Lamont coat of arms, in the advanced centrepiece, above a porte-cochère. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
