Scope and Content View of stairway in Minard Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. Rochead was responsible for the interior of the castle, which was even more Gothic in style than the exterior. This staircase hall has an oak dog-leg or open-well staircase, which consists of two flights of stairs at right angles with a half-landing. The balustrade continues along to the right, leading to the first-floor drawing room. On the ground floor is a fireplace surmounted by an armorial panel. To the right of the fireplace is a door decorated with cusped tracery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
