Scope and Content View of front face of watchman's stone at Barbreck's Well, Argyll and Bute This inscribed headstone is made of red sandstone and is set into a concrete base. The stone has a gableted top and the front face is carved with a round human head, wearing a wig. The rear of the stone is dated 1714 and says 'This al by Barbreck'. Carved in Roman capitals, the inscription reads: 'My name is Watchman, Heir I am, still watching day and night, welcoming all persons that comes heir, to drink for which end, heir you sie a drinking cupe, waiting for thee'. This stone is thought to have been erected by Archibald Campbell of Barbreck in 1714. He had succeeded his father by 1691 and was deprived of the estate in 1732. The family is said to have moved to Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
