Scope and Content Cross-shaped stone, Colonsay House, Colonsay, Argyll and Bute This carved stone was found near the old chapel of Riasg Buidhe on Colonsay, but is now at Colonsay House. It is pillar-shaped and has been carved to form a stylised cross. At the top of the cross is a head which represents God or Christ. There is a ridge around the chin which may be a beard. The lower arm is carved with a fish-like tail and the other arms are decorated with a spiral pattern. The closest parallels to this slab are found in the art of the eastern Mediterranean. Christ's head is similar to those seen on pilgrims' flasks from Jerusalem and the fish-like body is like the ancient 'ichthus' symbol, an emblem of Christ. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
