Scope and Content West door, Brechin Cathedral, Angus It is likely that this site has been occupied by a religious community since around 970 or earlier. Apart from the round tower, which dates to the late 11th century, most of the present cathedral dates to the 13th century. This doorway was the processional entrance to the cathedral and the finest feature of the nave. It is very decorative, with a progression of finely moulded orders of pointed arches carried on five shafts alternating with other mouldings. Lay people usually entered cathedrals through an entrance on the south wall of the nave. However, at Brechin, for some reason this entrance was on the north wall.
