Scope and Content Fanlight, No 42 Heriot Row, Edinburgh Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. No 42 has an elegant wrought-iron fanlight in the semicircular arch above the street-door. The design is based on concentric arcs, and is typical of the period, c.1800. Most fanlights in Georgian Edinburgh had a timber frame, but some were made of cast or occasionally wrought iron. A wide variety of glazing patterns is found, reflecting the taste of the first owners. The original crown glass gives an attractive sparkle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
