Scope and Content St Mary's Parish Church, Monymusk, Aberdeenshire In 1170 Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, established a community of Augustinian canons at Monymusk. The present church, although mainly modern, incorporates two principal features of the Augustinian priory-church: the west tower and the chancel arch. The church, a typical mid-12th-century parish church, is built in a Romanesque style. This term is used to describe buildings of this date in Europe which are characterised by the use of round arches, and thick walls to support the roof. Monymusk preserves the basic layout of many 12th-century churches, comprising a western tower, a nave and chancel. However, the original chancel was much longer. The crenellations on the tower were added in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
