Scope and Content View from south-east of Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase I, Dundee, prior to demolition Birkdale Place, Ardler Phase 1 consisted of six 17-storeyed slab blocks containing 1788 flats in total. They were approved for construction in 1964, and were constructed using the 'Skarne' system of pre-fabricated panels. This photograph shows two slab blocks prior to demolition. The large blocks rely on pattern from coloured cladding for their visual impact. The buildings have been prepared with explosives and the area cleared of people. The Skarne system of pre-fabricated panels and units cast on site was used to build this vast development. The company built a factory at Longhaugh Quarry to meet contracts offered by Dundee in the 1960s, and went on to build the Whitfield development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
