Scope and Content Staircase at No 1, north side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh No 1 Charlotte Square was built by Alexander Stevens to Robert Adam's 1791 design. Stevens designed Nos 1 and 2 as two ingeniously interlocked houses, and not the one very large house originally proposed for the east pavilion of the north terrace. No 1 has a small entrance hall leading to a rectangular stairwell, unusual both for its lighting from a window in each landing, and for its elegant wrought-iron balustrade of trelliswork panels supporting the handrail. The stair has hanging stone steps. The north side of the square comprises a row of 11 houses behind an elegant palace facade, with its east and west pavilions each containing two houses. Hence Nos 1 and 11 have their entrances respectively on the east and west gable ends of the terrace. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
