Scope and Content Plan of Dun Troddan broch by Sir Henry E L Dryden, Highland These circular towers known as brochs are chiefly found in the north and west of Scotland. Two concentric walls, bonded with lintels, allowed heights of two or more storeys to be achieved. Within the walls ran a spiral stairway. Dun Troddan is one of the best-preserved brochs in Scotland with roughly a third of its walls standing about 7.6m high. It shares many similarities with Dun Telve (about 500m to the east). Dryden visited in 1866, noting many of the internal features. A keen interest in archaeology took Dryden far beyond his native Northamptonshire. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, Ireland and even France, preparing sketches of buildings monuments ranging from megalithic tombs to churches and cathedrals.
