Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute To the north of Achnabreck farmhouse can be found some of the most elaborate and extensive cup-and-ring carvings in Scotland. The carvings are in three groups, the largest group being spread across three separate sheets of exposed rock. This outcrop of rock lies some 150m to the east of the largest group of carvings. Most striking are the multi-ringed cupmarks, some with as many as six rings around them, with extended 'gutters' running from the cup. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
