Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Cairnbaan, Argyll and Bute Two sheets of rock at Cairnbaan are heavily decorated with cup-and-ring markings. There is a noticeable difference between the two sheets, the first being composed of mostly plain cupmarks and the second mostly of multi-ringed cupmarks. Adorning this small rock-sheet is a mixture of plain and ringed cupmarks. Some of the larger multi-ringed cupmarks are arranged in abutting groups. At the bottom right of the rock is a badly-worn, shallow cupmark which is surrounded by a series of rays. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
