Date 1974

Catalogue Number AG 6881

Scope and Content Detail of font inside chapel at Kilchiaran, Islay, Argyll and Bute This medieval chapel at Kilchiaran on the west of Islay's Rhinns peninsula, is dedicated to St Ciaran, hence the name 'Kil-(chapel)-chiaran'. Roofless by 1794, it was partly restored and reconstructed by the Islay Historic Buildings Works Group in 1972-3. This font stands on a modern base at the western end of the nave. The late medieval circular basin is slightly damaged and the exterior is divided into four panels by plain vertical ribs, one of which is seen on the left of the basin. Fonts hold the holy water used in baptism ceremonies. In general they are found in prominent positions at the western end of churches, as at Kilchiaran, and are considered particularly sacred.
