Scope and Content St Kilda, Western Isles In the foreground is the two-storeyed building known as the Storehouse. It is situated opposite rocks which were used as a landing place by the islanders until a pier, above, was built in 1901. Almost opposite the pier are the 19th-century church and manse. The other buildings are the army camp which dates to 1966. In 1957 the owner of St Kilda, the Marquis of Bute, gave permission for part of St Kilda to be used as a radar tracking station. The army maintains a presence on St Kilda all year round. Towards the right, in the background is the village of St Kilda, which was rebuilt in the 1860s, and which became deserted in 1930 when the remaining islanders were evacuated to the mainland of Scotland. Behind the village is the curve of the 'head dyke' which dates to the 1830s. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
