Meigle Pictish cross slab (No 27, back)

SC 397615

Description Meigle Pictish cross slab (No 27, back)

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 397615

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 1737 CN

Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This view shows a fragment of cross-slab recovered from the old parish church in 1869. The rear of the slab is carved with two figures seated on chairs. Behind the one on the right is a small figure with pointed beard, clasping his knees. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
