Meigle Pictish cross slab (No.1, front)

SC 397556

Description Meigle Pictish cross slab (No.1, front)

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 397556

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 1469

Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab at Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This view shows the front of a stone which formerly stood at the right-hand side of the entrance to the burial-ground. It bears a relief-carving of a cross decorated with interlace designs. The cross is surrounded by carvings of animals and sea-monsters. The collection of carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in Eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common them is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
