Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows the left side of a grave-slab found in 1869. From the left, the carvings depict two beasts devouring a person, four men forming a swastika, a bear and a crouching horse. The end panel, with a beast chasing a naked man, is also shown. The collection of carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in Eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common them is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
