Publication drawing; Meigle No. 32, fragment of a cross-slab

SC 394860

Description Publication drawing; Meigle No. 32, fragment of a cross-slab

Date 1989

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 394860

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 25259

Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows a fragment of a cross-slab featuring the left arm of the cross. Below is part of a decorative panel which would have flanked the shaft. Both are decorated with spiral motifs. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
