Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows a fragment of carved stone found in 1889 outside the building now used as the museum. The front face bears the remains of a key-work decorated cross. The back is carved with a pair of confronting animals with a symbol above them. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
