Rait, cup-marked stone

SC 393600

Description Rait, cup-marked stone

Date 1989

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 393600

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 14698

Scope and Content Cupmarked stone at Rait, Perth and Kinross This cupmarked boulder is situated on the west side of the car-park of the antique shop which now occupies the steading of Rait farm. It bears plough scars, suggesting that it was once buried. If this is the case, it probably came from a nearby field. This is a view of the upper face of the boulder. It bears at least seventy cupmarks, measuring up to 80mm in diameter. An interesting feature is a large cup which is surrounded by six equally-spaced smaller cups in a rosette pattern. Cupmarks probably played a role in neolithic ritual activity, and are found on isolated boulders, as well as incorporated within monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
