Scope and Content Fragment of a cross-shaft found at Hallguards House, Dumfries and Galloway Survey work by RCAHMS archaeologists in 1993 discovered a fragment of 8th-century Anglian sculpture in the garden of Hallguards House. Each of the four faces of the cross-shaft fragment are relatively well-preserved, and bear finely-executed plant-scroll carving. On this face, part of the left side of the cross-shaft, are a cluster of leaf-fronds. The carvings date to the 8th century, a period when the Angles of Northumbria settled across lowland Scotland and Cumbria. Along with the settlers came monasteries and churches where finely carved free-standing crosses were produced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
