Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute To the north of Achnabreck farmhouse can be found some of the most elaborate and extensive cup-and-ring carvings in Scotland. The carvings are in three groups, the largest group being spread across three separate sheets of exposed rock. This group of carvings (the middle sheet in the largest group) has the largest cup-and-ring mark yet recorded in Scotland, at 0.97m across. Immediately north of this mark is an unusual carving which appears to have two cupmarks enclosed by four rings. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
