Scope and Content Inside of north wall of south-east tower in curtain walls of Skipness Castle, Knapdale, Argyll In 1261, Skipness Castle belonged to the MacSweens of Knapdale, vassals of the Lords of the Isles. In 1262, they were forced to grant Knapdale to the king's ally, Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith. They subsequently became Irish landowners and mercenaries. The lower embrasure lit the ground-floor room, perhaps a kitchen. Above, the door (left) leads to a now blocked garderobe which served what was probably the hall. The embrasure on its right contains a narrow window. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
