Scope and Content Exposed floors north range of Houldsworth's Cotton Mill in City of Glasgow Houldsworth's Cotton Mill was built in 1804-5 and is important because it was one of the first mills to built with fire safety in mind. The fireproof north range was built of brick on a cast iron frame. The roof was supported on cast iron trusses made from prefabricated sections bolted together. Steam from the engine passed through the hollow cast iron columns, so heating the range. Built: engine-house and fireproof north range, 1804-5; south range, mid 19th century.
