Scope and Content General view of Houldsworth's Cotton Mill, Glasgow Houldsworth's Cotton Mill was built in 1804-5 and is important because it was one of the first mills to be built with fire safety in mind. This is a general view of the mill from the north east. It rises to seven storeys above a sub-basement. The building is built of brick and decorated in Neo-Classical style with huge flattened columns. Houldsworth's Cotton Mill was one of the first buildings to use cast-iron columns, beams and roof components together. This was for fire prevention but had the added benefit of maximising the available floor space. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
