Scope and Content First-floor plan and section of Forfar Town and County Hall, Angus Forfar Town and County Hall was built to replace an earlier tolbooth after nearly ten years of discussion. The architect's plans for a steeple were rejected. The MP David Scott of Dunninald donated three crystal chandeliers to mark the completion. The musicians' gallery in the county hall may be original, as are the three crystal chandeliers. The hall houses a significant collection of portraits of important local people. Originally there was a weigh-house and market area at the back though their layout is now unknown. Even when new, these were 'dark, damp and dismal'. In 1843 the jail was converted to a coffee-room, shops and a library. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
