Scope and Content Cup-marked rocks at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute There are three sets of cup-marked stones at Achnabreck farm inside two fenced enclosures about 140 m apart. They are covered in complex cup-marks, rings and grooves. This is a view of one of the rocks. There are over 50 cup-and-ring markings with more individual cup-marks. As many as 9 rings can surround a single cup, and several have grooves radiating outward. A number of uses for such markings have been suggested, including maps, calendars, astronomical or even that they were done as acts of penance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
