Scope and Content The Fish House regulates and monitors the passage of fish through the fish ladder upstream from Water of Ken into Carsfad Loch/Reservoir. A 'fish house' allows the monitoring of fish passing by hydro electric station to ensure their safety. A fish ladder, fish pass or fish cannon is a structure built on or around a man-made barrier for migrating fish. This allows the fish to safely migrate during breeding season especially. The Fish House regulates and monitors the safe passage of fish through the fish ladder. The fish ladder at Carsfad (1936) is of the vertical slot fish passage type - a variation on the older pool and weir design. The fish have to move upstream through the rectangular rest chambers and through the slots in the concrete dams dividing each pool from one another. The slot means that the fish can swim through the internal ladder dams and do not have to leap over them which is very arduous for the migrating fish as they move to their spawning grounds.
