Scope and Content Service lift, second floor, Kinlochmoidart House, Highland This shows the service lift which was used to transport heavy goods around the house. On the left is an electric bell indicator panel, used to summon servants, which was made by John Bryden & Sons. The panel was connected by electric cable and bell-pushes to different rooms in the house. Country houses could easily be fitted with a wire and lever bell-pull system by the end of the 18th century. Electric servant bell systems were developed in the late 19th century and were a vast improvement on the old system which was liable to become clogged with dust and needed regular servicing. Kinlochmoidart House was built in 1884 for Robert Stewart, distiller and stands on the site of an earlier house which was destroyed by fire in the mid-18th century. William Leiper (1839-1916), designed the house in Scots Baronial style and used local whinstone and red Ballochmyle sandstone in the construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
