Scope and Content Early Christian cross-slab, Ellary Cladh a' Bhile burial ground, South Knapdale, Argyll and Bute It is likely that this was an early monastic site. Its name, which means 'burial ground of the sacred tree', reflects the significance of ancient nature traditions in early Irish Christianity. Any buildings of the period would have been made of timber. This pillar stone, one of the finest of its type in Britain and Ireland, may be dated to the 8th century. The large marigold in 'chip-carved' technique is decorated with spirals and the equal-armed cross below with spirals and foliate patterns. Similarities have been found between the decoration on this pillar stone and a manuscript of c.700 from Luxeuil, a monastery of Irish foundation in eastern France. This pillar stone is the most elaborate monument of its period in western Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
