Description Founding cast iron, sand moulding: glueing two halves of mould together prior to casting

Date 9/11/2017

Collection Historic Environment Scotland

Catalogue Number MV 000764

Category Digital Files (Non-image)

Scope and Content Process: Casting Iron, preparing the mould box (top half) for part of a bowl casting to be replaced on Ross Fountain, Waverley Gardens, Edinburgh. The mould for the casting has been opened up into its two halves with the decorative surface facing visible. The silicon pattern has been removed. The bottom half of the mould is on the right. The mould is then sprayed with a mix of plumbago and oil known as 'blacking'. This is ignited, the burning off to stop uneven surfaces developing where the casting will sit against the mould. This will ensure a smooth finish on the casting. Glue is applied to the bottom part of the mould. The other half of the mould is given a final clean and the 'gates' or holes that allow the molten iron to flow into the mould are filed. These are vivible. The two halves of the mould are then glued together using a silicate glue glued which withstands high temperatures. The part being recast is one of the basins from the Ross Fountain. JT and E Castings of Wigan carried out the foundry work. Sound: sound Colour: colour Running Time:1.34mins
