Scope and Content Process: Casting Iron, preparing the mould box (bottom half) for part of a bowl casting to be replaced on Ross Fountain, Waverley Gardens, Edinburgh. The mould for the casting is in two halves. The pattern of the object to be duplicated is packed and compressed into the sand to produce a negative and into which the molten iron will run to create a three dimensional casting. Here we see the foundry worker packing the silica sand into the mould after he has dusted the mould with chalk dust. .This ensures that the casting can be removed easily at the end of the process. The mould box will now have holes pushed through to allow gas escape during the pouring of the molten iron. The mould is now ready to be opened and the pattern removed. The part being recast is one of the basins from the Ross Fountain. JT and E Castings of Wigan carried out the foundry work. Sound: sound Colour: colour Running Time: 0.40 mins (40 seconds)
