Scope and Content Interior. Turning Mill. Mr Duncan explains the making of barrel bungs for herring barrels, made in sticks of four. The block was placed into the lathe, grooves cut and the blades removed the rest of the wood to create the bungs which were still joined together. These would then be finished on the 1st floor of the Turning Mill using a saw and a polishing barrel. A 'good man' could make 14,000 bungs a day. 2-3 million per year were produced by this one woodworking shop when the herring industry was at its peak. Mr David Duncan, owner. Born 1928. All working life spent at the Turning Mill (apart from a spell in the army). Sound: sound Colour: colour Running Time: 0.57 mins
