Scope and Content Section, from N of broch walls and interior, with notes and measurements, copied by W Galloway from drawings by HDryden 1852-66. Titled: 'Brough, Mousa, Shetland'. Information from Scran: These circular towers known as brochs are chiefly found in the north and north-west of Scotland. Use of two concentric drystone walls bonded with lintels allowed heights of over two storeys. The wall-space contained an intra-mural stairway. When Dryden visited Mousa in 1852 the interior of the broch was filled with rubble. His plan shows a number of features of broch architecture such as the intra-mural stairway and the massive cross-wall lintels. A keen interest in archaeology took Dryden far beyond his native Northamptonshire. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, Ireland and France, preparing sketches of buildings and monuments ranging from megalithic tombs to churches and cathedrals.
