Scope and Content This is a view of the MacDonald Holyrood Hotel at 81 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh. This area has been completely redeveloped during the early 21st century with the building of the Scottish Parliament at the eastern end of Holyrood Road and Canongate, and subsequent associated infilling of gap sites created following demolition of various breweries along Holyrood Road. This 154-room hotel was built for the MacDonald hotel chain in 1998. Like the other developments along Holyrood Road, the building conforms to the long narrow burghage plots of the traditional Scottish burgh layout which can still be seen within the Canongate. Designed by Hendry & Legge Architects, it comprises a central entrance block with flanking mono-pitch roofed blocks with glazed attic floor. The hotel is faced with artificial stone at ground and first floors, and harled upper storeys, with blue-framed plate glass windows.
